Where to look
Search your county assessor, city assessor, appraisal district, township assessor, board of review, or tax office website. Many official sites support lookup by address, owner name, or parcel number.
What to check on the record
Do not stop at the value. Review the facts behind the value: land, building size, class, age, condition, finished areas, improvements, exemptions, and sales history.
- Assessed value and taxable value.
- Property class and use.
- Building and land square footage.
- Year built and renovation assumptions.
- Exemptions and owner-occupancy status.
What to do if the record is wrong
Document the error clearly. Some offices correct obvious record issues separately from a formal value appeal, while others require the issue to be raised during the appeal window.
